Disney Mobile is yanking support for Marvel's Avengers Alliance and Marvel's Avengers Alliance 2 for some inexplicable reason, and fans are none too pleased.
The games, which were both Facebook browser titles and mobile options, will be shutting down at the end of the month on September 30th, and any player progress from anyone playing the game previously will be lost.
Marvel Avengers Alliance first launched back on Facebook in March 2012 before it made the leap to iOS and Android and it made a splash with its unique mixture of RPG elements and Avengers attitude. This year, Disney launched Marvel Avengers Alliance 2 earlier, with additional content and even more characters to play with.
Disney offered the following statement on its official site and Facebook today:
"Today we are announcing the shutdown of Marvel: Avengers Alliance and Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 on all platforms, including the App Store, Google Play, Amazon Appstore, Windows Phone Store, and Facebook. Beginning today, we are no longer accepting new purchases or downloads, but the games will be available to play until September 30, 2016.
At this time, we are shifting our development focus towards other online and mobile play experiences, and a growing selection of Disney Mobile apps. We deeply appreciate your enthusiasm and loyal support for Marvel: Avengers Alliance and sincerely hope you will continue to enjoy the large variety of online and mobile play experiences Disney offers, and will bring you soon!"
It remains to be seen exactly why these measures are being taken, but if you're interested in playing a little more before the games go away, you have until the end of the month. What were your favorite parts of the game? Will you be looking for something new to take its place? Most importantly, will you trust Disney Mobile to not pull the plug on other games going forward?
