If there’s one thing that we hate seeing players use to their advantage, it's unexpected exploits in the programming. Some players have found this in Overwatch, as they’ve been able to use a certain trick to utilize Mei’s ice wall ability to get outside levels and basically become invincible as a result – and that takes away fun from the rest of the players.
But don’t worry – Blizzard is fully aware of the problem, and tends to do something about it. Speaking in Overwatch’s forums, game director Jeff Kaplan explained that the team is already hard at work on fixing the problem, with a patch that could come as soon as today, depending on the team’s progress. “There is always the chance that our fix could fail,” he noted. “We’re currently testing to verify the fix.”
However, the fix was “surprisingly tricky for us to track down,” thus making it a bit of an issue to repair. That said, though, Blizzard is keeping a close eye on players that use it, promising to “aggressively” punish those that do so.
“We will be taking action against those who abused this exploit,” he said. “Overwatch is a PvP experience so that means exploiting game mechanics like this comes at a cost to those you are competing against. We take aggressive action against people who abuse game mechanics, hack or cheat. This case is no different.”
Kaplan also isn’t pleased with the time it took to address the problem, noting, “Apologies that this bug lingered for as long as it did. Hopefully, this should go away soon (along with those who abused it).”
So cheaters, you’ve been warned. If you play with ice, you best prepare to feel the chill that comes from it. (Okay, so maybe that was a little bit corny.)
Overwatch is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
