Final Fantasy XV's Power Ranger Suits Delayed, Square Enix Forced to Redesign

by Matthew Hayes

There are a lot of exciting updates coming to Final Fantasy XV very soon. Square Enix has outlined a rather ambitious DLC roadmap, which we've recapped in full right here. Yes, we're excited about the prospect of playing Final Fantasy XV in 1080p at 60fps on the PS4 Pro, and hell yes we're excited about being able to listen to the radio while riding our Chocobo.

Perhaps what we're most excited about, however, are these freaking awesome Power Ranger suits. Well, technically, they're called Magitek Exosuits, but come on: they're Power Ranger Suits. Just look at them:

You have to admit that the similarities between these DLC outfits and the recently revealed suits in the upcoming Power Rangers reboot (from Saban and Lionsgate) are pretty striking. In fact, they were a little too similar for some people.

In a recent active time report it was revealed that we may not be getting those Magitek Exosuits after all; not those suits specifically, anyway. They need to be tweaked a bit, because apparently someone at Saban, or possibly from Lionsgate or Toei, reached out to Square Enix pointing out that the designs were just too close for comfort. Square Enix made a very quiet note about this as it detailed all of the upcoming DLC. In the update we find the following (via Gematsu):

"Booster Pack (Free Version) (due out at a later date*)

  • Invincible suit “Magitek Exosuit” (Noctis, Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis)

*The publisher of Power Rangers pointed out that the design of the suits might be too similar, so they have been delayed to a later date in order to revise the design."

Yikes! It's unfortunate for sure, but totally understandable. Everyone who saw those suits were calling them Power Rangers suits, and the Power Rangers appeared in pretty much every headline describing the suits. It probably didn't take long for Saban to see what was going on and sound the alarms. The artists and designers at Square Enix are world-class, though, and we're confident that the redesigns will turn out just fine. As soon as we catch a glimpse of them or learn about the new release date, we'll let you know straight away.
