This morning we reported on a Reddit leak, from an admittedly unverified source, reporting various details about Destiny 2. The leak stated that Destiny II: Forge of Hope would be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC this November. It went over pretty specific story beats and special edition bonuses, as well as some random bits and pieces about the Bungie's new engine.
The story took off this morning, and if you're gamer then chances are you've read the same report from WWG or some other outlet. It seems the news made its way back to Bungie, who was quick to deny the leak altogether. Its denial comes in the form of an extremely brief tweet from Bungie writer and marketing manager Eric "Urk" Osborne:
Forge of Nope.— Eric Osborne (@UrkMcGurk) February 9, 2017
"Forge of Nope." Well that's that, it seems. Although not everyone is convinced that the leak is totally false. The top response to Osborne's tweet is from popular Twitch streamer "Gothalion" who fires back, "You said the same thing about Rise of Iron. Not sure if I trust you."
And we still have a few corroborations to the leak that have yet to be addressed. The leak describes a Cabal takeover of the Tower, which was also leaked by a product listing for a Destiny-themed Mega Bloks set. It's possible that someone fabricated this leak and used the Mega Bloks information as fuel. We've also heard that character progress from the original Destiny may not carry over into its sequel, which we also saw echoed in this newer leak.
So far, nothing in the leak seems too far-fetched to be true, the supposed November release date excepted. I did feel like a November launch would have been a bit premature, especially since we haven't heard anything about Destiny 2 from Bungie officially. This will be by far one of the biggest video games ever launched, so we expect a fairly long marketing campaign leading up to release.
So here we are, back to square one. While I don't think any of us are shocked to learn that Destiny 2 won't be out in November, I have a sneaking suspicion that we may yet learn that some of of these leaked details turn out to be true. Needless to say we'll be hanging out in the shady back alleys of the rumor gray-market, and if we hear anything else worth reporting, you'll be the first to know.
