Battlefield 1 Details Its New “Frontlines” Mode In A Gritty Trailer

by Nathan Birch

Last year EA and DICE sent gamers deep into the trenches in Battlefield 1, and now they plan to return us to the front lines with They Shall Not Pass. The first major Battlefield 1 expansion, They Shall Not Pass puts you in control of hardened French soldiers as they make a stand against the Germans at the Battle of Verdun, one of the bloodiest and most hard-fought conflicts of World War I.

In addition to the new setting, They Shall Not Pass also serves up new weapons and a new class, four maps and a fresh game mode, Frontlines. This new mode is basically a mix of Conquest and Rush modes – you start out scrambling to claim flags, but once one side's headquarters is captured, the mode becomes a frantic Rush-like scenario where you have to battle over telegraph posts. It's definitely one of the most complex Battlefield 1 modes, so you're probably going to want to check out the video above, which explains how it all works.

Oh, and all that Frontlines footage takes place on the new Rupture map. The site of a previous intense battle, this map is covered with wrecked tanks and machinery, deeply dug trenches, and fields of poppies. This one definitely serves up a lot of classic World War I imagery.

Battlefield 1: They Shall Not Pass charges onto PC, Xbox One and PS4 sometime in March.
