Supergirl's got a brand new look, and while it's rather muted in tone, it's actually a pretty cool vibe. YouTuber "Sconim Gaming" has uploaded a new video, we assume from the Injustice 2 multiplayer beta, giving us a nice view of this new shader for Supergirl.
It's called the "Phantom Zone" shader, and offers a nice alternative to the otherwise bold and iconic blue, red, and yellow that we're used to. The palette is a little understated, but we think it works pretty well. We have a strong base of silver accented by a shy royal red. It's definitely not a canonical getup, but it's not altogether random.
The Phantom Zone is a stretch of space near Krypton that is typically thought of as an inescapable prison. It's the Alcatraz of space and time. Time does not pass in the Phantom Zone, and nothing ever escapes that place. Well, almost nothing.
Supergirl herself ended up there for a brief spell on her way to Earth. An exploding Krypton knocked her traveling pod off-course and into the Phantom Zone, where she slept in timelessness for 24 years.
In older depictions of the Phantom Zone we see that almost everything is red, and in the old Helen Slater Supergirl flick we see Supergirl land on the surface of some planet or moon in the Phantom Zone, and everything is a silvery, lifeless gray.
So there you have it. The red and gray make sense in a way, and they look pretty awesome. It makes you wonder what other types of skins, shaders, and color schemes we might see in the full version of Injustice 2 for all of its characters. The fact that, as a layman, I was able to dig that deeply into an otherwise unassuming color scheme means that you hardcore comic book fans will have a lot to sink your teeth into once you start unlocking everyone's high-level gear and shaders.
