This is what we like to see. Today, Sony reached out through its official PlayStation Twitter account to congratulate Nintendo on the launch of the Nintendo Switch.
Today's a big day for @Nintendo! Congratulations on launch, we can't wait to play. 💙— PlayStation (@PlayStation) March 3, 2017
"Today's a big day for Nintendo," the post reads. "Congratulations on launch, we can't wait to play." I know it's such a simple gesture, but this seriously gave me goosebumps. We need more goodwill in the industry between competing companies because, in the end, we're all gamers. There's something very Iwata about respecting your role, and others' roles, in the industry, while at the same time placing the heart of the gamer on a pedestal above all things.
Many of you are probably rolling your eyes and wondering why I'd take the time to highlight this message. The more cynical among you are probably eager to conclude that this is nothing more than a PR stunt. Phil Spencer has proven that everyone talks about Xbox whenever he says something nice about another console, so here's Sony playing the same ace.
The thing, though? I don't even care if it's a PR stunt. I don't care if Sony did this with dollar-signs in its eyes. All you have to do is look in the comments sections of posts like this and notice that gamers from all walks of life - playing across all consoles - are coming together to talk about how much they love the games they're playing right now.
You see people talking about how much they love Horizon: Zero Dawn and Breath of the Wild in the same post. You have PlayStation fanboys talking about how eager they are for their Switch shipment to arrive. You see everyone sharing hearts and thumbs-ups and geeking over their favorite companies getting along and tipping their hats to one another.
Now, more than ever, we need a culture of kindness and celebration in this industry. Gamers need to stand up and celebrate everyone's stories. Whether you experience those stories on an Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch doesn't matter. It's the stories and the games that lift us up and inspire us. Thanks for remember that today, PlayStation. And congratulations Nintendo on a fantastic launch.
