Fighting fans are used to finding glitches in their favorite games, as sort of a way to exploit loopholes, like with Magneto’s infinite hits in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 or the classic “Guile handcuffs” in Street Fighter II. But Kotaku recently reported that a fan has found a way to weaken a popular character in the six-year old fighting classic Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
This is actually a pretty big deal, since the weakness factor is surrounding Phoenix, an unusually stronger character in the game. She’s been a solid choice for many fighting fans in the Marvel universe, though this trick lessens her power a little bit.
A YouTuber by the name of Finisher of War discovered the glitch, which essentially works as a counter to Phoenix’s transformation into Dark Phoenix, which triggers when she ends up killed – making her more powerful as a result.
The glitch revolves around Phoenix doing battle with Firebrand (from Demon’s Crest and the Ghouls ‘n Ghosts) series as he’s performing his Bon Voyage attack, and Viewtiful Joe coming in with a bomb assist. She still manages to resurrect after being killed, but her effects as the Dark Phoenix aren’t quite as powerful as they used to be. You can watch video of the clip below.
It’s kind of cool to see a glitch like this surface after all these years, though whether it works with the Ultimate version of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has yet to be seen. That version of the game was recently re-released for PlayStation 4 back in December, and just arrived for Xbox One and Steam/PC this week.
For the time being, though, those of you that own the original version of the game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 should certainly check this out, as it could make all the difference for those that are battling against Phoenix and trying to find some – any – kind of weakness with her character. It may not be an entire game changer, but it’s a glitch that’s definitely worth exploring, especially if you’re a die-hard fan of the game.
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is available now.
