Mass Effect: Andromeda is a big game, with an array of massive planets to explore, but a lot of your time will be spent confined to a much-smaller space. The Tempest is your new ship, and much like the Normandy from the original Mass Effect trilogy, it will act as a sort of portable home base, allowing you manage various things and engage in character moments with your squad and crew. Knowing your way around the Tempest will be crucial, and IGN recently provided a brief video tour of the ship and its varied inhabitants.
The areas inside the Tempest include the bridge where you'll make your intergalactic travel plans, a loadout station that lets you manage your characters' equipment, and an area where you can check on cryo pods, shop, and do a little research and development. The Tempest will also have its own mini missions, which will task you with improving life aboard the ship in some way or solving a small mystery of some sort.
The Tempest's inhabitants include full squad members like Liam, Peebee, Drack, Vetra, and Jaal, but you'll also find yourself interacting with a variety of other crew members. Among these are quirky, rock-tasting science officer, Suvi, slightly dorky pilot, Kallo Jath, and the underappreciated engineer, Gil. While you can't play as these additional crew members, you can bet some (or all of them) will be available for a little faster-than-light romance.
As far futuristic spacecraft go, the Tempest looks like it will be nice and homey. Hopefully your various human and alien pals really start to feel like a family as Andromeda progresses, because chilling out on the ship with your crew is at the heart of everything from Star Trek, to Star Wars, to Firefly.
Mass Effect: Andromeda touches down on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on March 21.
