We’ve known right from the beginning that Mass Effect: Andromeda will have a multiplayer component, but thus far BioWare has declined to say all that much about it. Well, that just changed, as the developer has released a six-minute Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer trailer. You can check it out, above.
Mass Effect: Andromeda offers co-op missions, in which you and up to three friends take on waves of enemies, while trying to complete a series of objectives. Teamwork and strategy will be important, as the enemies will present a daunting challenge, and combining attacks may be the only way to take them down.
Mutliplayer will come with 25 basic character kits, which you can make your own with a variety of unique skills, and over 40 weapons. Most gear can be used by any character, and can be further modified and upgraded to suit your style. Speaking of which, multiplayer missions will reward you with XP and credits, which can be used to level-up your character and purchase random upgrade packs, because everything needs loot boxes now.
Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer will ship with five “Fire Base” maps. These include the arid Sandstorm, isolated asteroid base Zero, chilly Icebreaker, volcanic Magma, and gloomy abandoned Kett ship, Derelict. Most of the maps are fairly compact, but appear to have plenty of strategic possibilities.
Finally, Andromeda will also have multiplayer missions you can access from the main campaign. These Strike Team missions can be played with AI backup or with human teammates, and the rewards you get from them can be used in your single-player game.
Based on our first real look, Mass Effect: Andromeda multiplayer won’t be particularly deep, but it looks polished and fun. The Strike Team missions are a particularly good idea, as its always a drag when a game’s single-player and multiplayer modes don’t intersect in any way. Of course, BioWare is also promising plenty of extra content down the line for Andromeda’s multiplayer, so it may end up taking up more of your time than you expect.
Mass Effect: Andromeda arrives on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on March 21.
