TheSpeedGamers (TSG) are a group of philanthropic gamers who take their live-streaming to the next level, and it's all for a great cause. Since their first gaming marathon in 2008, this group has raised over $700,000 for different charities, and they hold the Guinness World Record for "Longest Relay of a Japanese RPG" for an astounding 168-hour Final Fantasy marathon in 2009.
This year TSG is returning with another incredibly audacious plan to host a 120-hour Final Fantasy stream. "We'll be hosting a 120-Hour Final Fantasy Marathon for charity in which we play through all of the main series of Final Fantasy games, as well as some side games," TSG member Jasef Wisener said in a press release. I had trouble wrapping my mind around that idea. Are they really going to try to make it through every single mainline Final Fantasy game, or are they simply going to play parts of each? I reached out to Jasef to see what he had to say.
"For this event in particular, we'll be for sure playing FF 1-10, 12, 13, and 15," he said. "We're planning to showcase at least a couple of hours of 11 and 14 if time permits, and we've also got X-2 and some other side games waiting in the wings if we need them. The plan is definitely to play and complete those 13 non-MMO main series games."
That's a huge undertaking, but Jasef emphasized that, above all, that the point is to raise funds for charity. This year TSG will be raising awareness and funds to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (info here). St. Jude's is honored and esteemed not only for its research in the treatment and prevention of life-threatening pediatric diseases, but also for its promise to never turn a child away due to a family's inability to pay. It's an incredible organization, and we can't wait to see how the gaming community opens its hands in giving and support.
Players from the US, UK, and Canada will all meet in Arlington Texas this July to collaborate on this monumental and critically important marathon event. We'll be covering the stream as it happens, and we'll be sure to drop you a reminder in the days leading up to the event so you don't miss out. In the meantime, set aside a little gil every month so you can reach deeply when the time comes. Let's make this the most successful gaming stream for charity in TSG's history!
