CD Projekt Red has done amazing things with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, racking up millions of units sold and earning critical acclaim for both its main game and its various expansions. But the developer says that we haven’t seen anything yet, as its next project, Cyberpunk 2077, could be even bigger.
Speaking with Polish website Gazeta, the studio’s co-founder, Michal Kicinsk, talked about the game’s progress, and noted that it could be an even bigger success than Witcher. Yep, you read that right.
“I am convinced that Cyberpunk 2077 may be a much greater success than The Witcher 3,” he said. “The Futuristic world of Cyberpunk is closer to what we know from everyday life. It is also increasingly popular as evidenced of the phenomenon’s presence in a number of films, books, comics and games. You have to remember that fantasy, is a niche topic.”
Kicinsk also noted that he feels that Cyberpunk would benefit from a more approachable set-up, something that would earn a wider audience from the gate. He feels that a great deal of Witcher’s success comes from the first two games in the series being incredibly popular in Europe (and not doing too shabby here), and the IP getting traction in the form of books, tabletop games and a TV show.
“I believe that in the case of ‘Cyberpunk,’ CD Projekt will be able to fight not only for the prestigious prizes and awards, but also for great commercial success,” he noted. “The combination of these two elements in the gaming industry is difficult but entirely possible, as the example of Rockstar today, and Blizzard before them.”
The Witcher III definitely helped put CD Projekt Red back on the map, but from the sound of things, Cyberpunk could help the team excel even further – and that’s saying something, considering just how great Wild Hunt and its expansions are.
