This is a huge breakthrough in the world of emulation, and the first time we've ever seen anything like it. Thanks to a recent update to the Dolphin emulator, which plays Game Cube and Wii games, users are now able to access online functions from the Wii, including the Wii Shop Channel.
That's right. If you're running the latest version of Dolphin (version 5.0-2874), you're now able access the Wii Shop Channel and download games. In the video below, we can see how fast and easy it is to log on to the Shop Channel and download the demo for Fast Racing League. Because you'll be (most likely) using a modern computer with a fast internet connection, all of these demos and games should download extremely quickly. The Fast Racing League demo is fairly sizable, but it downloads in mere seconds.
What's more, you can even plug in your credit card information and buy games from the Wii Shop Channel! This is unheard of. Never before have we had emulation software so modern and so funcional that we've even had the option or desire to plug in our payment information and purchase games from an online store. In the video its shown just how easy it is to add points to your account and redeem them for new games. This is going to be a huge deal to many of you.
"Dolphin can now download the free demos Nintendo made available on the system, as well as purchase Wiiware and Virtual Console games from the service. Because this feature is so new, it may take some time for the guides to get updated. The Wii Networking Guide will get you most of the way, but, you may also want confirm that you have the following:
Valid Console ID and keys.bin from that console.
Console country must be valid for that System Menu region.
Properly Extracted Certs - Old tool Cert tool was flawed, please go through the process again if you've done this in the past.
All IOSes and Updates. The System Menu's Online Updater can be used so long as the System Menu and its IOS are installed.
SSL Verification Enabled - This isn't necessary but you'll want it on if you're buying games. As of 5.0-2941 or newer, this is on by default. In older builds this can be enabled manually in dolphin.ini by using the option "SSLVerifyCert = True".
With all of the above, you can make full use of the Wii Shop Channel within an emulator!"
