Warning: The following story contains Resident Evil 7 spoilers.
Resident Evil 7 may be mostly focused on new settings and characters, but those who brave their way to the end of the game are treated to a bit of a cameo from classic series protagonist Chris Redfield.
Usually Chris Redfield being in a Resident Evil game wouldn’t be big news, he’s in most of them, but the version of Chris in Resident Evil 7 looks notably different than he has in the past. This has led to all sorts of speculation that this character may actually be some sort of Chris clone, Redfield sibling, or perhaps the mysterious masked Umbrella soldier Hunk. None of this is true, as Capcom has confirmed the character at the end of Resident Evil 7 is Chris Redfield, but then question remains, why does he look so strange?
“This time, the characters were made with photo realism in mind, and Chris Redfield receives a pretty impressive remake. It was more realistic modeling. Although Chris gave a pretty real impression even in Resident Evil 6, it was still deformed. Although [Resident Evil 6 Chris] is fairly realistic, when mixed with the characters of Resident Evil 7, a sense of incongruity will come out.”
In other words, the old Chris and his giant pro wrestler muscles would not have fit in with the more realistic Resident Evil 7 aesthetic. Makes sense! Now I want to see what other classic Resident Evil characters would look like with the new realistic approach. Would we even recognize Jill Valentine and Wesker? What would a "realistic" version of Leon's hair look like?
Chris Redfield stars in Resident Evil 7’s free Not a Hero DLC, which hits sometime this spring.
