Hey, do you play video games to get away from real world concerns, like, say, the baffling state of the American political system? Well, too bad. Nothing can escape the stain of politics now! Even Japanese fantasy RPGs require Trump jokes, because heaven forbid we stop thinking about him for one second. Okay, okay, I’ll calm down.
But yes, Final Fantasy XV has waded into the fray and added some additional political humor, if you can call it that. The latest Final Fantasy XV updates add a number of new features, including Chapter 13, Verse 2, an alternate take on most fans’ least-favorite part of the game. The update makes Chapter 13 far less of a drag, but adds tedium of a different kind, as your teammate Ignis now drops a reference to “alternative facts” during a cutscene. You can check out video proof, above.
The term “alternative facts” was originally coined by US Presidential Counsellor Kellyanne Conway, and has since been used by Trump’s opponents to mock his administration’s rather fluid approach to the truth. According to folks on Reddit, the new Final Fantasy XV update also contains reference to “fake news.” This all may seem a bit out of place in a fantasy RPG, but Final Fantasy has obliquely tackled political issues in the past, and the Final Fantasy XV Twitter account has mentioned Trump previously.
You know what? Now that we’ve opened this Pandora’s box, let’s just go all the way. Add a character based on Trump in a future update. Final Fantasy loves its wacky hairdos – this will be Square Enix digital hairstylists’ ultimate challenge!
