As if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson wasn’t enough to deal with, the classic Rampage monsters will now have to deal with another powerful force – Negan! (Well, okay, the actor who portrays Negan, but you get the point.)
Deadline is reporting that Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who’s appeared in films like Watchmen and The Losers (alongside his iconic role as the bullying Negan in The Walking Dead) has joined the cast of Rampage, New Line Cinema’s big-bucks adaptation of the hit 1980’s arcade game from Midway.
The film already features an impressive cast, including Johnson, Moonlight’s Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman (also from Watchmen), Joe Manganiello and PJ Byrne.
Morgan’s role in the film is Agent Russell, a man who works for a covert government division called OGA, enabling him to have a great deal of attitude with his character – perfect, when you consider he put the same kind of swagger into his role as Negan. There’s no word yet if that’s a “good guy” or a “bad guy”, as Morgan’s character could easily be working alongside Johnson to stop the creatures – or teaming up with Akerman (the film’s villain) to make them even worse.
The film’s plotline hasn’t been revealed yet, but the classic video game revolves around the evolution of three deadly monsters – a lizard (not unlike Godzilla), an ape and a wolf – as they tear through town after town, destroying everything and eating everyone that gets in their way. More than likely, the film will pit Johnson and his allies against them, while Akerman and Morgan’s characters take their own part as the “rampage” continues.
Rampage, set to be directed by Brad Peyton (who previously worked on San Andreas with Johnson), is currently in pre-production, based on a script by Ryan Engle, with revisions by Carlton Cuse, Ryan Condal and Adam Sztykiel. We should be hearing more information on its plotline as production comes along – as well as what side of the fence Morgan’s character sits on. Hey, teaming The Rock and Negan together would probably be pretty spectacular, guys.
We’ll see how well this monster show fares when Rampage arrives in theaters next year, on April 20, 2018.
