Exciting news today in the Star Wars universe. We have it on good authority that someone has it on good authority that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is being rebooted somehow. I know you've been burned by rumors in the past, we all have, but we'll walk you through exactly where this information is coming from and we think you'll feel a lot better by the time we're done.
So our primary source here is Liam Robertson. Liam does some really great, borderline scholarly work in the gaming world. You've probably seen his stuff on YouTube through the "Unseen64" or "DidYouKnowGaming?" channels. Not too long ago we reported on an Unseen64 video detailing a canned open world game starring the Flash that never came to fruition (find that here). We only point this out to assure you that Liam has a reputation worth upholding in the community, and we don't think he'd concede his credibility just for clicks.
Now then, we heard about this Knights of the Old Republic reboot on Liam's podcast (via StarWarsNewsNet), which is currently only available to Patreon subscribers. During the podcast he says the following:
“I’ve learned now that [BioWare Austin is] pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they’re going to be doing that for the indefinite future. What they’re currently working on right now—and I have this on good authority—is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic.
"I don’t know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now. I don’t really know how that game’ll end up. I’ve heard that it isn’t exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it’s kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we’ll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now.”
Sounds pretty juicy, huh? A Knights of the Old Republic remaster or remake would be totally welcome, that's for sure, but we can't help but hope that the team at BioWare decided to get carried away and make something new. Even if it isn't on the same scale as something like Mass Effect Andromeda, a new Star Wars RPG would be so exciting.
It's likely that we won't hear anything official about this game until much later on, but we'll be keeping our ears to the ground. In the meantime, we definitely do have some exciting new Star Wars news coming soon. This coming Saturday, April 15, we'll get to see the debut trailer for Star Wars Battlefront II which is airing during "Star Wars Celebration" in Orlando. Stay tuned!
