The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild rethinks a lot of the series’ long-held conventions, including the controversial subject of voice acting. Sure, Link is still silent (aside from the occasional manly grunt), but all the game’s other major characters actually speak during cutscenes, with Princess Zelda herself being a regular Chatty Cathy. Zelda’s new voice may not be the one that you’ve imagined in your head for the past 30 years, but it definitely suits this take on the character.
Zelda’s new voice is provided by American-Canadian actress Patricia Summersett (yup, her British accent is a LIE), who’s really taken to the new role, filling her Twitter and Instagram with all manner of Zelda memes and references. Fans, in turn, have taken to Patricia.
Recently, Game Rant sat down with Patricia to get her thoughts on the Zelda series and voicing one of the most iconic characters in gaming history. First up, the all-important question – what’s her favorite Zelda game?
"What’s my favorite Zelda game? Well, because I haven’t played enough of Breath of the Wild, and I have a feeling this could change later, but I think to-date I would say Ocarina of Time is one of my favorites.”
It seems Summersett knows here Zelda stuff, so what, to her, makes this most recent version of the character stick out?
"I really, I love how they present her now. I loved […] her pants, I love her personality that she is very assertive and out there. I really like the way that they portrayed her now. I think she’s a beautiful portrayal of Zelda. It was a very clear direction that they took to make her a strong woman presence, autonomous, you know. She can really take care of herself and to have a developed journey and she comes to the place where she has to reach down inside and activate her powers. Yeah, it was pretty incredible to be a part of that.”
I like her pants, too. Ahem. Finally, will Summersett back to voice to character in the future?
“I would play Zelda any day, any how. Yeah! [laughs] Of course, I mean, I can never predict what is going to happen in the future, but, yeah, any time that I was ever given the opportunity I would 100% continue on.”
I hope Summersett does get to return. I really did like her performance, and if we can have the same guy doing Mario’s voice for 20 years, why can’t we have a regular Zelda? I suggest you check out the rest of Game Rant’s interview with Summersett, at the bottom of this post.
