Apparently Sonic has some lead in those iconic red shoes, because the blue hedgehog’s latest retro adventure is taking longer to arrive that many fans hoped it would. Originally, the old-school Sega Genesis throwback Sonic Mania was supposed to arrive sometime this spring, but last month the game got pushed back to a vague summer release date.
Summer is a tricky window to pin down – most people think of July and August as summer months, but, technically, September is part of summer as well. But September also bleeds over into fall, and the big Holiday gaming season. “Summer” could mean July 1, or it could mean the end of September when the leaves are already starting to fall off the trees and Christmas shopping has begun.
Well, it seems Amazon may have given away Sonic Mania’s mysterious release date. The online retailer recently sent this message to people who pre-ordered the Sonic Mania physical collector’s edition..
We have received new release date information to your pre-ordered video game. The release date for the video game listed below has been changed by the publisher, and we want to provide you with a new delivery estimate based on the new release date:
Sonic Mania Playstation 4 - Estimated arrival date: September 04, 2017.
We’ll make every effort to get the delayed items to you as soon as possible.”
September 4! Ugh! Pick up those feet Sonic, I want to smash Robotnik now! In all honesty though, I’m glad Sega is actually giving Sonic Mania the time it needs. Rushing out unpolished games out has been a major issue (maybe the major issue) for Sonic over the past couple decades, and I don’t want a super-promising game like Sonic Mania to suffer the same fate.
Sonic Mania is in development for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
