Injustice 2 finally hits PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on May 16, but you don't have to wait that long to get your superhero fighting game fix. NetherRealm is bringing the cinematic DC brawler to mobile on May 11, and it's going to be completely free to download and play. You can pre-register here for Android, and here for iOS.
But is it worth your time? I got to go hands-on with Injustice 2 Mobile during a preview event in LA this week, and I can tell you confidently that you'll want to go ahead and clear out a little space in your storage for this one.
Injustice 2 Mobile makes some huge improvements over the original Injustice: Gods Among Us. DC Comics nerds as well as fighting game fans have a lot to look forward to in a couple of weeks; you're in for some huge surprises.
Keep scrolling to see why I was so pleasantly surprised by Injustice 2 Mobile, and why I believe this is going to be the hottest mobile game of the season.
It Will Contain the Entire Injustice 2 Story Mode
The team at NetherRealm and WB are working hard to make sure that, shortly after launch, the entire Injustice 2 story campaign can be experienced in the mobile game. This won't be some kind of abridged version with cutscenes summarizing the main events of the game. This will be the real deal. Expect to fight through every single battle, and watch every cinematic event.
The story mode won't be available right away on May 11, but we should have updates shortly about when to watch out for it. Keep in mind that Injustice 2 Mobile is completely free, so the fact that you get the entire single-player campaign (eventually) included is pretty enticing.
The Character Models Are Taken from the Console Version
The development team isn't cutting any corners when it comes to your combatants. They recognize and appreciate that players who download Injustice 2 on their smart devices want to see their favorite heroes and villains looking amazing and doing amazing things like any other DC Comics fan, and that's why they started with the console character models and worked from there.
I've seen and played this game in person, and I can tell you that it looks wonderful in motion. The character designs and animations are absolutely faithful to their console counterparts, and it's safe to say that this is one of the best-looking mobile games ever made. You'll be proud to show it off to your friends.
So which heroes and villains from the console version will you be able to play? Most of them, actually. On May 11 when Injustice 2 Mobile launches, it will boast about 80% of the console version roster, and more characters are on the way.
The mobile version of the original Injustice: Gods Among Us ended up surpassing its console counterparts in terms of roster and scope of characters included, so we won't be surprised if we see the same thing happen with Injustice 2 Mobile.
If you have a favorite hero or villain, chances are, you'll get to play them when Injustice 2 Mobile hits the iOS App Store and Google Play Store.
The Combat System Has Been Totally Overhauled
No more stationary characters taking swipes at each other. In Injustice 2 Mobile your players can actually move across the entire plane of battle. You'll swipe to dash back and forth, and lunge in for attacks. Simple taps will execute your combos, but now each character has three special moves that they can execute on the fly.
Chaining combos and special moves will be key to maximizing damage, and of course, each character has his or her own unique Super move. The Super moves are exactly the same on mobile as in the console version, believe it or not.
Expect Tons of Gear
The RPG mechanics and gear that make Injustice 2 such a unique and addictive fighting game experience on console are absolutely here to keep you hooked to your smartphones and tablets as well. Each character can be leveled up to a level cap of 60, and gear can be leveled up as well.
Like any great RPG, you can expect gear to augment your stats in interesting ways, and wearing entire sets of gear will yield unique bonuses as well. If you connect an entire set of gear for your characters, it will completely alter the way that he or she looks. If you manage to stick it out and get a full set of level 60 gear, your hero will be receive an entirely new makeover and anyone who fights you will be able to instantly recognize how much you've achieved and what type of gear you've earned.
For those of you who, like me, love to grind for awesome looking loot, Injustice 2 Mobile will have plenty of delicious carrots hanging on sticks for every single character in the game, so look forward to that.
You Can Form Your Own Justice League
It's time to band together with your friends and form your own Justice League. Or, if you all love the villains, form your own Society -- whatever suits you! A special cooperative game mode will be coming to Injustice 2 Mobile shortly after launch that lets you form a "league" with your pals, or with fighters you meet online, to take on special challenges.
Imagine working together with your friends to take on a special raid boss for some exclusive gear or experience. That's the vibe NetherRealm and WB are going for in this co-op mode, and it sounds so MMORPG to me. Everyone will engage in battle with a big boss, like Brainiac, in hopes of taking him down together to earn some sweet loot. This will give you and your friends a great excuse to keep practicing and keep playing together.
