April was a solid month for gaming, with games like Persona 5 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe delivering big fun, although some games like Yooka-Laylee and Guardians of the Galaxy fell a bit short of expectations. We now move onto May, which isn’t as busy, but may be more solid.
May is a little on the thin side, as the month before E3 often is, but it plays host to some key major titles, and a handful of promising indies you should keep your eye on. From the major publishers, we have Prey, the long-awaited arrival of DC Comics fighter Injustice 2, and Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia from Nintendo. On the indie front, we have a couple of promising licensed titles in Friday The 13th: The Game and Resevoir Dogs: Bloody Days, and the beautiful Zelda-esque adventure, Rime. If you’re willing to step out of you comfort zone just a bit, there’s plenty to play in May.
Every week we do a more detailed rundown of what you need to play in The Five, but for now, here’s a broader overlook of all the good stuff coming in April. Hit the following pages for five highlights, then a full list of everything worth paying attention to…
Prey (PC, Xbox One & PS4, May 5)
Prey is an original sci-fi adventure unrelated to Bethesda’s previous game by that game, which tasks you with surviving a space station overrun with creepy shape-shifting aliens. Prey comes to us from Dishonored creators Arkane Studios, so you can take on the aliens using a lengthy list of innovative weapons, neural enhancements, and alien powers you’ll need to combine in various creative ways to survive. Prey has hints of both BioShock and Metroid, so give it a try, because we’re probably not getting sequels to those series any time soon.
Injustice 2 (Xbox One & PS4, May 16)
If you’ve been reading WWG for the last six months, you probably don’t need me to introduce this one! The latest fighting game from Mortal Kombat creators NetherRealm Studios, Injustice 2 delivers a new cast of 29 eclectic DC Comics characters, and a ton of new depth and features. Injustice 2 now offers a full, RPG-like gear system, faster, more technical fighting, and of course, another shock-filled story where anything can, and will, happen. If you love Batman, Superman, and the rest of the DC Universe, this is the game of the year for you.
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS, May 19)
Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia is the remake of the 1992 NES game, Fire Emblem Gaiden, which was never released in the West. Gaiden is considered the “dark horse” of the series, and Fire Emblem Echoes will retain most of its atypical (for Fire Emblem) features like an explorable overworld and dungeons. Don’t worry though, the game will also feature the classic turn-based tactical battles fans of the series know and love.
Friday The 13th: The Game (PC, Xbox One & PS4, May 26)
Don’t drink, don’t smoke, and definitely don’t go skinny dipping, because Friday the 13th: The Game is almost here. This is a multiplayer slasher simulator, in which most of the players play hapless teenagers hoping to survive their stay at Camp Crystal Lake, and one person plays the unstoppable Jason. Friday the 13th: The Game packs in numerous refences to the classic series, and, of course countless brutal kills. Your slumber party days may be long behind you, but this game may be the next best thing.
Rime (PC, Xbox One & PS4, May 26)
Finally finished up The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Well, then you might want to give Rime a try. Featuring a gorgeous cell-shaded art style, Rime casts you onto a mysterious, puzzle-filled island. Rely on your wits, and your adorable fox buddy, to survive and reach the top of the tower looming in the middle of the island. This one looks very promising.
