Like any other competitive game, Overwatch players will often find themselves at the mercy of their teammates. Depending on how hard they want to try, it can be very difficult to pull out a win, especially if they're actively trying to hamper your progress. Dafran has a history of doing this to his teammates in matchmaking outside of his esports career, and both Blizzard and Selfless have had just about enough of it.
Multiple threads on Reddit have been made about the streamer's antics; some of the threads stay up, some are deleted to avoid witchhunting scenarios. But one of Dafran's most recent episodes where he queued up for competitive play, mentally and physically checked out of the match, encouraged others to throw with him, and referred to the throwing group as "Overwatch Isis."
Blizzard responded to the outcry by issuing a ban on Dafran, citing that his behavior violated an Overwatch rule that called for respectful and sportsmanlike actions from both competitors and spectators.
"Due to this violation, as of June 8, Blizzard will suspend Dafran’s access to his current Overwatch accounts for one week, and from Competitive Play for the remainder of Season 5," the ban notice read. "Further, Dafran is disqualified from Overwatch Contenders Season Zero, will not be eligible for Overwatch Contenders Season One, and is disqualified from all future Blizzard-sanctioned tournament play for the duration of this competitive season. Dafran’s Overwatch Contenders team is still eligible to compete with a substitute."
Dafran's now former team, Selfless, supported the decision and booted the player from their team.
"Upon further VOD review of Dafran's behavior, especially this past night, we have found his actions to be completely unacceptable, and in clear violation of Blizzard’s rules around player conduct, in addition to our own expectations of player/teammate conduct," the update from Selfless read.
The notice closed by saying the team agreed with Blizzard's decision, and they apologized to any fans or players who were affected by Dafran's actions.
Dafran did not take the ban quite as well as his team, though. In a questionable announcement that hinted at reform but still showed his griefing ways, he used some very choice words that essentially boiled down to him not caring much about what happened to his esports career.
He later calmed down and said he deserved the punishment, but his message was met with conflicting responses from those who weren't sure if he deserved such a ban.
Selfless has said that they will continue to work with Dafran to get him the help and counseling that he needs while he looks to reform his actions.
