StarLadder StarSeries S3: CLG CSGO Pull off Upset to Eliminate Gambit

by Steven Cropley

With its life on the line, Counter Logic Gaming took the upset victory over No. 10 Gambit in Kiev for the StarLadder i-League StarSeries season three finals.

Kicking off the event by taking on the No. 1 team in the WWG CSGO Team Rankings did not set up an easy path for the North American side. After being taken down 16-11, CLG bounced back for a dominant win over 16-3. Next up was No. 15 HellRaisers to which CLG would lose by the same scoreline as it did in its first match of the event.

Then it came time to put up or shut up. Both teams were 1-2 and a loss here meant a group stage exit while a win would see the team move into the final round.

The match would be contested from start to finish with Gambit coming away with a 9-6 lead at the half from the terrorist side of Cobblestone, one of its best maps. CLG would nab the pistol thanks to a triple-kill from Stephen "reltuC" Cutler allowing the team that picked up the last several rounds of the first half to keep the momentum.

Pujan 'FNS' Mehta would secure map point with a triple kill of his own to put CLG ahead 15-9. Gambit would crawl back into it, one round at a time until coming within one round of forcing overtime. CLG would clutch up and take the final round, however, eliminating Gambit from the event.
