Phase one of Valve’s Dota 2 roster registration system period has come to an end and now rosters are locked in place going into the first fall major. In what basically amounts to a redraft league, organizations scrambled from September 4-18 in the hopes of landing the perfect roster. Even finishing in the top eight at The International 2016 couldn’t save some players from being released as rostermania took its toll.
To get some perspective, in the professional player registration list provided by Valve’s web site, there were 283 roster moves, including signings and drops, made by over 70 teams. With that came some significant roster changes, but one team decided to experiment and keep their current roster, the team that won The International 2016 and winners of $9,139,002 – Wings Gaming.
From some of the most recognizable name in the sport retiring to the creation of all new “super teams”, this year’s roster shuffle was one of the most frenzied and exciting to date. Let’s take a look at some the most notable changes and see where your favorite player landed.
Evil Geniuses have made significant moves as Clinton “Fear” Loomis announced his retirement and then moved into a coaching role with the squad. Peter “PPD” Dager also decided to make the transition from player to management in an undisclosed position with the organization. And making his third return to the EG lineup will be Artour “Arteezy” Babaev who comes over from Team Secret, again.
Digital Chaos, whose Cinderella runner-up finish at the International put North American Dota 2 on the map, largely kept their roster intact with the sole exception being the replacement of David “Moo” Hull by offlaner David “MoonMeander” Tan.
Notable teams and their new rosters:
Evil Geniuses: Arteezy, Suma1L, UNiVeRsE, zai, Cr1t-
Fnatic: Raven, Mushi, Ohayo, eyyou, DeMoN
TnC: Teehee, kuku, Sam_H, ryOyr, Cast
OG: N0tail, ana, s4, JerAx, Fly
Team Liquid: MATUMBAMAN, Miracle-, MinD_ContRol, Kuroky, BuLba
Alongside the roster shuffle with current and established teams, some brand new teams have surfaced trying to figure out the formula to success. Although there were quite a few teams, the one everybody is looking at is the newly formed Team NP.
Team NP’s roster features good veteran players that have won previous majors and The International. Anchoring this new team is Kurtis "Aui_2000" Ling, who as a member of Evil Geniuses and other teams has career winnings totally over eight million dollars and wins at The International and the Dota 2 Asian Championships. The other player of note on this new roster is Jacky "EternaLEnVy" Mao who has had a very successful career winning both the Shanghai Major in 2016 and the MLG World Finals.
- Kurtis “Aui_2000” Ling
- Jacky “EternaLEnVy” mao
- Arif “MSS” Anwar
- Avery “SVG” Silverman
- Theeban Siva
With phase one being complete, the roster system now moves on to phase two where players that have been perhaps overlooked can be signed by various teams. Teams may not drop players during this period, but may sign them until they get to five active players.
Will there be any surprises during phase two of this new system? Not likely, but since this is the first go around, anything can happen.
