Hi-Rez Studios Announces SMITE Rivals, a Collectible Card Arena

by Matthew Hayes

Hi-Rez Studios has proven that it isn't interested in developing anything less than dazzling. All of its projects have grown to become enormous hits with wildly passionate players. While Paladins and SMITE still have so much life left in them, Hi-Rez teased that it would be breaking into the mobile space with a new competitive game, and today we finally get to see that game: SMITE Rivals.

"Hi-Rez Studios’ latest project, SMITE Rivals, is a Collectible Card Arena (CCA) featuring well-known deities and characters from the popular MOBA SMITE, and will be free-to-play on PC and mobile devices."

With SMITE Rivals, Hi-Rez has endeavored to take everything that makes playing SMITE a fun and empowering experience, and distill that into some core gameplay elements which form the foundation of this new card arena / dueler. It's just you and your opponent, your respective decks, three lanes, and your wits and reflexes. If SMITE and Magic: The Gathering or Hearthstone had some kind of hip and beautiful offspring, it would look a lot like SMITE Rivals.

"SMITE Rivals is played one-on-one in quick intense matches that take place on a three lane field. Players use cards to deploy units across lanes in an attempt to take the enemy tower on the other side. As players collect and unlock more cards in SMITE Rivals, they gain access to new units, strategies, and playstyles. In addition, any progression that players make on their account in SMITE Rivals will be saved to any platform they log in from for an easy and persistent gameplay experience." That last bit is especially convenient. As you play across mobile, tablet, and PC, all of your progress is tracked and carried over to each platform.

We can't wait to get our hands on this one. While we don't have an official release date at this time, you could be one of the first people to play SMITE Rivals by signing up for the closed beta. To sign up, click here.
