DreamHack Masters: No. 3 Virtus.pro Rock No. 14 fnatic into Elimination

by Steven Cropley

Elimination match two would be between No. 3 Virtus.pro and No. 14 fnatic. fnatic is making its LAN debut with the second iteration of the old lineup, one that dominated for months. fnatic's loose play style can see them beat any team at times if the players are on point, however, as we saw in the Swedes loss to No. 11 Gambit, it certainly has its downfalls. Virtus.pro had a close match against Misfits before falling to Gambit in the winners match, only two rounds better than its opponents did. Both teams were be looking to make a statement in this match.

Map one landed on Mirage, fnatic's pick. After a 3-0 lead for Virtus.pro on the back of a pistol round victory, fnatic would strike back with two of its own from the defensive side. The Poles would put their foot on the pedal from there to win five straight for an 8-2 lead before the Swedes could grab their third. That round would seemingly ignite the teams confidence as it closed out the half with a streak of its own reaching six rounds before Virtus.pro picked up the final for a 9-6 lead at the half. The plow was unleashed into the second half, winning four straight to take a seven round lead before fnatic could successfully take the B bomb site for its first round of the half. Once again the one round caused a momentum swing that saw fnatic pick up two more rounds, bringing the gap to four rounds before Virtus.pro could stop the bleeding. A swing would once again take place and Virtus.pro being so close to the finish line would close out map one 16-9, defeating fnatic on fnatic on its pick.

Finally, fnatic would grab a pistol to kick of Virtus.pro's map of Cobblestone. A fantastic use of HE grenades would set Virtus.pro up for a second round victory, shutting down a good start for fnatic early. A timeout would not even stop the Virtus plow as the Polish side dominated the Swedes from the counter-terrorist side, storming off to a 10-1 lead before fnatic could salvage a second and final round of the half. Virtus.pro would hold a 13-2 lead going into the favored side of the map. A knife kill and spray on the body in the second half pistol would be an image for how this game was going, all be sealing the deal. Two rounds later and fnatic was going home, losing map two 16-2 and the series 2-0.
