Between Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's Playstation line, the argument has always been "who's better?" It's never been about saying they're on even ground. It's always about direct competition and having a winner and a loser.

At Dreamhack Valencia, the folks over at Hi-Rez Studios look to claim a winner with the first ever Paladins Console Wars. "The $50,000 tournament creates esports history by squaring off the top Xbox One and PS4 teams from both Europe and North America to crown the top Paladins team across console platforms."

According to Todd Harris, Hi-Rez Studios Co-Founder and COO, a decades-spanning conflict will come to an end. "As far as we know, no major multiplayer shooter has ever had their best players from both PS4 and Xbox One play one another in this type of venue. We can finally settle the Blue vs Green debate once and for all."

Having spoken to Harris previously, we had spoken about how big of a role the community has within the company. With the announcement of the Paladins Console War at Dreamhack Valencia, Harris believes the community will welcome the idea with open arms. "What is exciting, for the first time console shooter players get to see what's really best. Green vs. Blue. We think the community is going to be excited by that."

A cross-platform tournament like this is a rarity and something that really hasn't been done before with much exposure. "We're not afraid to be experimental," said Harris. "If it's something that supports the player base, supports particularly competitive players, we're going to give it a try."

Not only will the community thrive with this move, the players actually playing in the tournament will also reap the benefits. "Competitive players out there will benefit from it," said Harris. "For too long, it really depends on publisher deals and exclusivity arrangements like 'Am I going to play this game on Xbox or is it going to switch over to Playstation?' It's just the reality. The fact that we're simultaneously shipping on both platforms and looking to bring these communities together really just provides more opportunity for competitive players regardless of what platform you're on."

When asked if cross-platform play was something in the near future, Harris spoke about the difficulties faced when dealing with two major corporations who are deadlocked in a rivalry with one another. "It's not in our roadmap only because the console companies are not completely on the same page," said Harris. "There's been some back and forth around who's more open and who's not and this is our way of kind of cutting through that."

If you're a console junkie, you most likely have an allegiance to either Xbox or Playstation 4. There's really no loving both sides of the argument if you're a hardcore gamer. You'll always pick favorites between the two while listing out the pros for your rig of choice and about every con in the book for the other console. Hi-Rez wants to settle the debate for you and they will during the first ever Paladins Console War at Dreamhack Valencia.
