While Overwatch has become a staple in the world of first person shooters, Blizzard Entertainment Inc wants to take the game to the next level. The company announced today that they have created an esports division for Overwatch.

"Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. has formed a dedicated division within the company that will handle management, operation, sales, and distribution for Overwatch® esports programs, including the Overwatch League and Overwatch World Cup."

After acquiring Major League Gaming back in 2015, Blizzard plans to incorporate those minds and resources into ensuring that the Overwatch Esports division goes off without a hitch. "In addition to bringing together some of the most talented people from across the entire organization, this effort includes the full integration of Major League Gaming, acquired in 2015, into Blizzard and also leverages some of the best and brightest from traditional sports, esports, and entertainment."

According to the release, the division will be branded heavily with MLG. "The new division, which will retain the MLG name, will build on Blizzard's nearly 20-year history as a leader in esports and leverage MLG's extensive experience with live events and content distribution. It will also operate the MLG-branded media network, which will broadcast both Blizzard and Activision esports content as well as other premium gaming programming."

It won't just be Overwatch getting involved as they plan on integrating the Call of Duty franchise. "In addition, the associated teams and technologies will serve as the operational foundation, partnership hub, and media-production network for the Overwatch League as well as Activision’s Call of Duty® World League. This includes league management; team, media, advertising, and sponsorship sales; content development; and event production."

As for the other games under Blizzard's name, they'll continue as usual but will now have a whole esports division at their disposal. "Blizzard’s separate esports team will continue to directly manage and operate the global esports programs for Heroes of the Storm®, Hearthstone®, StarCraft®, and World of Warcraft®, but will begin leveraging the new division’s capabilities for media production, sales, and distribution."
