This week on The Invade, Matt Hempstead of Shot Callers eSports stopped by and broke down the upcoming matchup between Phoenix1 and Dignitas in the 2017 NA LCS Spring Split Playoffs.
Dignitas were many people's pick to contend for the top of the NA LCS when the split started. Their slow start pushed many off of the bandwagon, but their second half of play is what many fans expected to see. Strong play from both Chaser and Ssumday propelled this team from mediocrity to a legitimate contender.
On the otherside of the matchup, Phoenix1 has arguably been the most consistent team since the start of the Spring Split. Even through turbulent roster changes, they're yet to hit a massive losing streak and have continued their winning ways.
According to Hempstead, based on recent performance and a slip-up, the matchup is a lot closer than you think. "On the surface you would say that P1 is clearly the favorite but following week 9, P1 is trending downwards while Dignitas is riding a hot streak," said Hempstead. "Chaser has been the most improved jungler over the latter half of the split and has bettered his chemistry with Ssumday and Keane. If Dignitas has a chance to take down Phoenix 1 it's going to be on Chaser to hunt down those first bloods and get one of his solo laners an early advantage."
That doesn't mean Hempstead has lost all faith for P1. Infact, he sees a clear advantage for P1 in the bot lane. "For Phoenix 1, I see last week as more of a training regiment. I don't think there's a chance that Shady sees anytime during playoffs. It's also likely that Meteos plays the majority if not all of the games in the jungle. For Arrow, he had a rough week especially on the Lucian pick but that was likely a result of him trying to overcome the heavy burden of the substitutes. Come playoffs, Arrow and Stunt will be back in form and should handle LOD and Xpecial rather easily."
"This one all comes down to that jungle spot," Hempstead said. "If DIG can someone get Meteos onto a meta champ like Rengar or Kha'Zix then P1 might be overthrown but I don't see it at this point. Phoenix1 in 4."
