Pokemon Go's New Year event has officially begun. From now through January 8, 2017, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, and their respective evolutions will spawn more frequently, meaning that now is the perfect time to finally get that Charizard missing from your Pokedex. During the week long event, players, lures will last for one hour instead of 30 minutes to help entice more Pokemon to appear.
Players can also purchase Bronze, Silver, and Gold gift boxes that contain Lucky Eggs and Lures at a discounted rate.
The start of the event was not without some confusion, as Pokemon Go sent out a notification signaling that the event was about to start. However, the new gift boxes didn't switch over when the notification went out, nor did most players notice an increase in Starter Pokemon spawns.
Pokemon Go's Christmas event is also currently underway, offering an increased chance to get eggs with one of the recently introduced Baby Pokemon, as well as a special single use incubator per day.
Once Pokemon Go's holiday events wrap up next week, it's expected that the next update will introduce a handful of new Pokemon into the game. The popular speculation is that Johto Pokemon Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile will be added next to give players new rare Pokemon to find and capture.
