The Pokemon Go update is starting to roll out on Android devices, meaning that it won't be long until players can start catching over 80 new Pokemon from the Johto region. While the Johto Pokemon haven't been added (yet), Niantic has released new information on how Evolutionary Items work in the game.
Evolutionary items are used to evolve certain Pokemon. In the main Pokemon games, players typically need to either use the item on a Pokemon or trade the Pokemon while they're holding the evolutionary item. Since Pokemon Go doesn't have trading, evolutionary items will work a bit differently. In order to evolve an eligible Pokemon, you'll need both a specific evolutionary item AND a certain amount of candy.
The specific example given by Niantic was Scyther, which requires a Metal Coat AND 40 Candies to evolve into Scizor.
Here are the specific evolutionary items that will appear in Pokemon Go and what Pokemon they evolve:
Dragon Scale: Seadra into Kingdra
Metal Coat: Onix into Steelix, Scyther into Scizor
Sun Stone: Gloom into Bellossom, Sunkern (a Gen 2 Pokemon) into Sunflora
Up-Grade: Porygon into Porygon2
King's Rock: Poliwhirl into Politoed, Slowpoke into Slowking
