Two regions in Japan are about to find a whole lot of Snorlax. Pokemon Go announced that Snorlax would begin spawning much more frequently in the Kumamoto & Oita Prefectures through March 13th. Although no reason for the event was given, it's believed that Niantic is trying to promote tourism to the areas, which were hit by earthquakes last April. In a short statement released on Twitter, Pokemon Go noted that the areas were still under reconstruction from last year's quake and warned fans to avoid dangerous places.
Pokemon Go previously held a similar event in Japan last year that targeted areas affected by a 2011 tsunami. That event helped raise over $13 million in tourism for the affected areas.
While most praised the event, some have criticized the event as Snorlax can learn the move "Earthquake."
Pokemon Go is also currently holding an event to celebrate the anniversary of the first Pokemon games' release. That event is scheduled to end later today.
