Yesterday, the Pokemon Company added a new update for its popular mobile game Pokemon Shuffle, a "match three" style game featuring hundreds of levels and new Pokemon. The new update (Version 1.4) added data and support for upcoming levels featuring characters from Pokemon Sun and Moon. As is the way of the Internet, someone mined Pokemon Shuffle's gamefiles and discovered a few interesting items that hint at the game's future.
The biggest find was the inclusion of Marshadow in Pokemon Sun and Moon. Marshadow is the new Mythical Pokemon for the Alola region, a Fighting/Ghost type formed entirely out of shadows. Thanks to a datamine of Pokemon Sun and Moon, we've known about Marshadow for months, even though the Pokemon technically hasn't been announced or revealed yet. It's likely that Marshadow will be a part of a limited time event or Escalation battle level, similar to other Mythical Pokemon in the game.
Here's what Marshadow will look like in Pokemon Shuffle:
Details about Marshadow are still scant, although we know it has its own special move called Spectral Strike and a Special Z-Move called Soul Stealing 7-Star Strike.
Other discoveries in the Pokemon Shuffle datamine include icons for "Ash's Pikachu," a Pikachu wearing one of the seven hats Ash has worn throughout the Pokemon anime. With the anime's 20th anniversary quickly approaching next month, it's assumed that Ash's Pikachu (which has also been found in Pokemon Sun and Moon) will be distributed in multiple games as part of the upcoming festivities.
What we don't know is whether Pokemon Shuffle will feature Z-Moves or any new game mechanics to tie into Pokemon Sun and Moon. Pokemon Shuffle previously featured Mega Evolution as a featured mechanic (players could Mega Evolve certain Pokemon to unlock abilities that helped them clear levels) so it's definitely feasible that the game will transition into powerful one-off Z-Moves.
Other changes to Pokemon Shuffle include locks on certain event stages until players have progressed through the main game and some usability changes to make finding levels and selecting Pokemon a bit easier for players.
Pokemon Shuffle will begin introducing new Pokemon into the game this spring.
