Last week, Niantic CEO John Hanke gave a long interview with Wired's German magazine, in which he revealed some of Pokemon Go's plans for 2017. One overlooked part of the interview concerned comments about AR devices and whether we'd eventually see Pokemon Go for smart glasses or similar devices.
In the interview, Hanke noted that playing Pokemon Go on smart glasses would allow players to see the world around them instead of focusing on their phones. After all, one of Pokemon Go's goals is to encourage players to explore the world around them and smart glasses (and similar devices) would encourage players to do just that.
However, Hanke noted that Niantic would only spend time developing games for smart glasses once there were enough devices on the market to justify the expense. He also added that Niantic wasn't developing its own AR hardware to play Pokemon Go or Ingress, Niantic's other AR mobile game.
Playing Pokemon Go with smart glasses isn't exactly a new concept. Last year, a smart glasses developer ported Pokemon Go over to a pair of their smartglasses and showed off footage on Twitter.
