Ash's Pikachu is returning to the Pokemon video games. The iconic Pokemon will be distributed in Japan this summer as part of a major promotion to promote the 20th Pokemon anime movie.
According to a leaked copy of the Japanese magazine CoroCoro, players in Japan will have an opportunity to obtain a Pikachu wearing one of the hats Ash has worn over the course of the anime series. By pre-ordering a ticket for the new movie, players will get a code that they can use to unlock on Pikachu. Which hat Pikachu is wearing will depend on when players redeem the code.
Ash's Pikachu will also have a Pikashumium-Z, a special Z Crystal that unlocks the Z-Move 10,000,000 Volt Thunderbolt.
At this time, it's unclear whether players each cap-wearing Pikachu is considered a different Pokemon (meaning players can collect them all), or if players will need to choose which hat they want their Pikachu to hold.
Currently, this event is for Japan only. However, US and European players will likely get an opportunity to get this special Pikachu when the new Pokemon movie is released in the US later this year.
This isn't the first time Ash's Pikachu has appeared in the games. The Pokemon Company previously distributed the Pokemon as part of various special events, although this is the first time the Pikachu has gotten a special sprite.
The Pokemon anime will celebrate its 20th anniversary next month and the new movie, titled Pokemon: I Choose You, appears to be a rehash of the anime's first episode. Based on the movie's initial trailer, we may finally see Ash and Pikachu interact with the Ho-oh they met in the first episode of the series.
